Layout – Lobby

  • Camera and voice pod (with you in it)
  • Chat pod for communication
  • Music
  • Timer
  • Game or picture (the picture could be a “hook” to engage learning in the session)
  • Instructions for setting up audio
  • Instructions for using the chat pod and/or playing the game, and/orstopping the music if you have it.
NB....you can watch some of the below videos "about extensions" for a refresh on how to load some of these.

Task 2

How to record a session

Find and Share a recorded session

Make a short recording of your Lobby Layout and email it through to me by Friday 7th March. Make sure to introduce yourself and have your Camera pod active. The recording doesnt need to be any longer than one minute.

Need help? Dont forget your connect course on the Staff Training Hub is your first port of call! if you would like to book a half hour 1:1 session with me please send me an email with some suggested times.

Good luck! Arabella :-)

Session 3 - Roles and Layouts - Mon 17th Feb 2014

Great session on Monday except for some minor errors with permissions and videos. We will cover this in more detail next Monday.

Meanwhile, please watch the following short videos regarding room set up and layouts, particularly the use of the share pod. The videos are very short and are easily accessed by simply clicking on the link (then press the play button)

Once you have watched these videos please go to the Connect course in the VLE Toolkit and watch the following videos, developed by Sally Bird. Sally describes the setting up of layouts and also further use of the share pod.
Watch Sally populate a new layout with pods - you will need ot login to Moodle for this video and the following 2 videos. You may also need to use your scroll bars in order to see the entire demonstration.

Watch Sally Sharing in a Share Pod

Here are some revision questions to consider - please feel free to answer them via return Blog Post.

·         What do you do to copy a layout?

·         How do you work out which pods you will need? (your plan will tell you the types of activites and teaching techniques you will use)

·         What do you do to create a blank layout?

·         How do you change a participants status?
Thanks and I hope to see you all in Connect next Monday!

Group 2 SME's - Advanced Facilitation in Connect

What a fantastic first session we had on Friday 31st January!

It was inspiring to see so much enthusiasm in the room and Im very muchy looking forward to the start of our Connect sessions next week.

Please see the schedule for the training on the "Schedule - Group 2" page to your left.

Meanwhile think about some of the following questions:

  • What are the little squares on the screen called?
  • How many pods does Adobe Connect have?
  • How can I email myself the contents of the chat or notes pods?
  • Is it important to plug your headset in before you enter the room? If so, why?
  • How do I change the chat colour? Why would I want to do this, or ask my students to do this?

Feel free to post your answers here...thanks!

Summary Session 6

Using Case Studies in Connect & Session Planning

During the program we have been exploring teaching tecniques and how these might be applied in the virtual classroom, Adobe Connect.

This week we looked at the use of case studies and how we might use these to facilitate learning. The case study was very relevant to the program - delivered by Melanie Lowe (WSI), we explored how Melanie used Adobe connect for assessment purposes with a remote student. This was followed by the opportunity for deeper learning for all with the use of breakout rooms and pre-worked socratic questions.

Tthe link to the case study is here, and is also found on the Program Webmix - dont forget you will need to login with your normal DEC username and password to access this recording. The handout on Case Studies can be found in the VLE Toolkit, Connect course (login with your Moodle login and password).

Session 5 Summary

Date: Monday 12th November

  • Experience break out rooms - what are they? How do they work?
  • Further exploration of the 8 pods and brainstorming their use
  • Follow up of guest speakers
Follow this link to the Connect course in the VLE Toolkit and watch the video on breakout rooms. You can find the video in the "now I have my own room...what next?" link in the left navigation bar. You will need to login to Moodle.

I strongly recommend working through the whole Connect course.

Week 5 Challenge

1. Find a Connect "buddy" - if you dont have one let me know

2. Send me a very short recording during this week - anything from 30 seconds to 2 minutes:
Start your camera and say hello - let me know if there is anything in particular you would like me to cover
  • Show me how you load a picture into the room
  • Send me the recording which will be kept confidential!
3. Enrol in the 'Connect Champions": Community of Practice

Guest Speaker - Katryna McCosker

Purpose & relevance to the learning program

Katryna has been delivering online learning via Adobe Connect for approximately 9 months. Katryna was invited as a guest speaker to present the layout of the Adobe connect room she uses and to provide her top tips.

Benefits of a guest speaker

  • Connecting in real time with an expert who can answer questions and provide useful hints and tips
  • Can tap into overseas speakers as there is no need to be physically present
  • Ability to extend the learning by collaboration via a Blog, Wiki or other means.
Please reply to this post with additions to this list!

Katrynas Top Tips

  • Attendee list - make this fairly long so as to see who is in the room more clearly
  • Nice pics in the lobby - this puts people in a good frame of mind for learning
  • If you dont use a timer in the lobby, make sure you are in the room anyway in 10 mins prior
  • One chat pod only is used instead of several. One chat pod can follow you through all the layouts for the session
  • PPP is kept brief to encourage discussion
  • File share – describes these as handouts for participants
  • Videos in weblinks - work well
  • Utilise breakout rooms where possible
A big thanks to Katryna for her presentation!
Please contact me if you would like to present!
